HA1 Task 1 – Technical Glossary

Pixel
A pixel is where many small squares are put together to create a image or color on a TV screen. it is digital imaging picture element is a physical point in a raster image, or the smallest addressable element in an all points addressable display device; so it is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen.

Colour Models- RGB and CMYK

RGB and CMYK has many colour models used in computer graphics the most common one used are RGB- red, green, blue. and for printing is CMYK.  RGB   colour model is a colour model in which redgreen, and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colour. The name of the model comes from the initials of the three primary  colour , red, green, and blue.

RGB is mostly used for printing and CMYK is used on screen.

The CMYK color model (process colorfour color) is a subtractive color model, used in color printing, and is also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in some color printing: cyan, magentayellow, and key (black). Though it varies by print house, press operator, press manufacturer, .

Resolution is basically the quality of the picture that has been taken. if you are to close to the TV it will be at a bit blued therefore the quality is not that good but if your standing a bit back the image will be a lot better to look at. mage resolution can be measured in various ways. first is, resolution quantifies how close lines can be to each other and still be visibly resolved. Resolution units can be tied to physical sizes.

Display Resolution=   The display resolution of a digital television, computer monitor or display device is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. It can be an ambiguous term especially as the displayed resolution is controlled by different factors in cathode ray tube , flat-panel display which includes liquid-crystal displays, or projection displays using fixed picture-element arrays.

Raster Images

PSD=
Photoshop Document file is a layered image file used in Adobe PhotoShop. PSD, which stands for Photoshop Document, is the default format that Photoshop uses for saving data.  PSD is a proprietary file that allows the user to work with the images’ individual layers even after the file has been saved.

GIF= The Graphics Interchange Format is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.

TIFF=  Tagged Image File Format
is a computer file format for storing raster graphics images, popular among graphic artists, the publishing industry, and both amateur and professional photographers in general.

JPG= files, also known as JPEG files, are a common file format for digital photos and other digital graphics. When JPG files are saved, they use "lossy" compression, meaning image quality is lost as file size decreases. JPEG stands for Joint

PNG= Portable Network Graphics is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), and is the most used lossless image compression things on the Internet.

BMP=  So known as bitmap image file is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device

Vector images

Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygons—all of which are based on mathematical expressions—to represent images in computer graphics.

EPS= A vector file requiring PostScript language to draw its image. You must have a specific software application to create an EPS file, such as Adobe Photoshop,

WMF=Microsoft Windows Metafile files are used to store vector and bitmap-format image data in memory or in disk files for later playback to an output device.

SVG=SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics and it is used to define vector-based graphics for the Web.

AI=Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Adobe Systems. The latest version, Illustrator CC, is the seventeenth generation in the product line.

Compression - Lossy and Lossless

Lossy compression works very differently. These programs simply eliminate bits of information, tailoring the file so that it is smaller.

Image Capture Devices – scanner, digital camera, tablet/smartphone

A scanner is a device that captures images from photographic prints, posters, magazine pages, and similar sources for computer editing and display. Scanners come in hand-held, feed-in, and flatbed types and for scanning black-and-white only, or color.

A camera that stores images digitally rather than recording them on film. Once a picture has been taken, it can be downloaded to a computer system, and then manipulated with a graphics program and printed http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/digital_camera.html

a smartphone is a device that lets you make calls, but also adds in features such as the ability to send and receive e-mails and edit Office documents so it like a small computer in the palm, of your hand.

Optimising

Optimising means Converting an image file to a type that can display in a web page andReducing the file size of an image so that it is small enough to be
easily sent or received electronically for example  downloaded as part of a web
page

Storage and Asset Management

consists of management tasks and decisions surrounding the ingestion, annotation, cataloguing, storage, retrieval and distribution of digital assets.

Digital photographs, animations, videos and music exemplify the target areas of media asset management
